Ultimately, if MTGA doesn't allow for a truly casual mode where winning has no value but the inherent joy of success, then it is failing to provide a crucial element of the MTG experience. Better to have players that mostly play casual and only occasionally buy packs when new sets drop than players who churn out of the game because their sick of playing against the same small meta. But for the long-term health of MTGA I think it's worthwhile. This is probably the biggest thing standing in the way of a truly casual mode. That kind of mode doesn't encourage spending wildcards and thus gems (money) and so WOTC has no reason to spend resources implementing it and divert players toward it If someone's looking to grab their daily 250-450 gold and run they always have normal mode. But not every format needs to appeal to every player. It's an inefficient use of time for lots of playersĪlso true. Not everyone has the time to play for rewards and fun. Even the most ardent asshole will usually give up when there is no other reward for their behavior and their victims have limited means to express their frustration. Yes, there will still be people entering this mode with tuned standard decks because they just like winning and don't care if they upset casual players in the process, but that would be a minority. People will still play all the same decks just to beat the casual players It's the only way to create a mode in which the game exists only for the sake of play. The "Play X white spells" and "Kill 20 creatures" daily quests would still progress of course, since they rely on deck construction not wins. No weekly 3 packs progress, no gold, and no cards. But no worries, because the solution is pretty obvious:Ī mode where wins don't count for a damn thing. There is fun to be had in playing a goofy deck even if it doesn't win, but most people are going to eventually get irritated at consistent losses regardless of how inherently enjoyable their deck is. This is of course, hugely stifling to people looking to play fun, casual, janky, or off-meta decks. Even if people don't feel like risking their rank or grinding the ladder, they want to get gold and packs and so are going to play the decks that most consistently get them those rewards. We see pretty consistent complaints on this sub that the decklists seen in and out of ranked queue are mostly the same (Mono-Red, Mono-Blue, Gates, B/U/G Midrange, etc.).
